INTERIM LEGAL OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

DEVELOPMENT OF EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE STRUCTURES IN THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT

LEGAL OUTSOURCING

INTERIM LEGAL OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

Many legal departments have been trying for several years to redefine and optimise their organisational structure – or they are thinking about it. Among the goals are:

  • Standardisation and digitalisation of internal processes
  • Redesign and further development of the consulting services to internal specialist departments
  • Knowledge and clause management
  • Development of business structures such as contract management or corporate housekeeping
  • General use of technologies (automation, document management, matter management)
  • Development of standards for processes and project management

These – and other aspects – have been collectively known for some time under the term legal operations and describe the establishment of efficient and effective structures in the legal department. The same questions also arise when setting up a legal department for the first time, e.g. in a start-up or in a medium-sized company (see our START.LEGAL concept).

On the one hand, the implementation of legal operations projects requires detailed knowledge of the specific business where the implementation is to take place. On the other hand, such projects also require interface competencies between legal expertise, IT implementation and business processes, which cannot easily be established internally – and usually only with a long-term increase in the cost structure.

In order to achieve the closest possible integration of these competencies, we support our clients not only as consultants, but also in the short, medium and long term with an Interim Legal Operations Manager. This interim staff member becomes a part of our clients' organisation and supports them – also as a registered attorney – in a previously agreed scope of services. Through the combination of cooperation and analysis, we can guarantee that we can determine the individual problem areas of our clients and make customised recommendations which can be implemented with the help of the CLARIUS team. The temporary external support enables us to do this without having to allocate significant internal resources to it.

The starting point for an Interim Legal Operations Manager can be a concrete project (e.g. introduction of a contract management system) or the general desire for organisational measures.

Case Study

Increased efficiency through
short-term operative support

Situation

A subdivision of the legal department of a medium-sized business is constantly overloaded. The burden of daily tasks prevents long-term organisational issues from being tackled. Something must change, but it is unclear what.

Solution

After a three-month phase in which an Interim Legal Operations Manager familiarises themselves with and analyses the concrete challenges and daily work of the department, standard activities are jointly identified which rob efficiency in daily work.

Partly through standardisation and transfer to specialist departments, partly through the development of digital solutions, the processing time for these activities is significantly reduced and, in the further course of time, supplemented by a process management system already in place in the business. Long-term fixed costs are not increased.
